Today is Opioid Misuse Prevention Day

August 20, 2020 by DFC

Today is Opioid Misuse Prevention Day. According to The University of Texas Health Science Center School of Biomedical Informatics, Houston sees one opioid-related death every 32 hours. As healthcare providers, we have the opportunity to support and treat individuals with opioid use disorder— especially in the place we call home #Houston. Doctors for Change and local champions are hosting a free training on Friday, September 18, 2020, to help get you MAT certified.

This is a FREE training for physicians who are interested in obtaining their waiver to prescribe buprenorphine, one of three medications approved by the FDA for the treatment of opioid use disorder.

This activity will assist physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants who wish to apply for a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid use disorders. Our goal is to get medical providers the information they need about opioid disorder, discuss how it can be treated, and how to implement this into your practice to help with troubleshooting and logistical barriers for your patients.

This activity is in partnership with Baylor College of Medicine, Harris County Public Health, Houston Health Department, Providers Clinical Support Systems, and Doctors for Change.

Funding for this initiative was made possible (in part) by grant no. 1H79TI081968 from SAMHSA. The views expressed in written conference materials or publications and by speakers and moderators do not necessarily reflect the official policies of the Department of Health and Human Services; nor does mention of trade names, commercial practices, or organizations imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.

This project is supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as part of a financial assistance award totaling $2,079,506 with 100 percent funded by CDC/HHS. The contents are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily represent the official views of, nor an endorsement, by CDC/HHS, or the U.S. Government

AAAP is the DATA 2000 sponsor for this training.

Funding is also made possible by the CDC Overdose Data to Action grant.

Note: All Half and Half MAT waiver trainings will offer 4 continuing education credits for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and pharmacists.

This past year has once again highlighted how systemic racism affects every
aspect of our society. The combination of COVID-19 and senseless police
killings have reinforced the urgency of the continued fight against racial
inequality. We must act now to create policies and enact laws that don’t just
acknowledge racial disparities, but turn the tides towards a more equal and
    just society.
Please join CHILDREN AT RISK virtually on March 19 to thank our legislative
champions for their work and dedication in the fight against racial
inequality, and lend your voice to ensure the fight against systemic racism
remains a priority in the legislative session.
