Aug. 14: “Coordination of Care: Maternal Health”

Join Doctors for Change for “Coordination of Care: Maternal Health,” a forum on access to care issues in the area of maternal health. Topics covered in this forum will include an overview of the state of maternal health and rising maternal morbidity and mortality rates in Texas, as well as the challenges and successes that our city and states have experienced surrounding coordination of care in the context of maternal health.

Speakers

June Hanke, RN, MSN, MPH
Strategic Analyst/Planner/GIS Analyst
Harris Health System

Ms. Hanke will set the foundation for the discussion of maternal mortality in Texas, and will delve into the challenges of analysis in measuring maternal mortality. Her presentation will also analyze severe maternal morbidity specifically in Harris County, with particular emphasis on racial disparities in maternal mortality and morbidity risk. She will also inform the audience about initiatives currently underway to address this critical issue.

Erica P. Giwa, MD
Assistant Professor, Obstetrics and Gynecology
Baylor College of Medicine

Dr. Giwa will speak on process of the Houston Endowment Reducing Maternal Mortality (RMM) Initiative and the recommendations for advancing work in the area of maternal mortality and morbidity that resulted from this effort.
